Virginia officials have announced new grant funding aimed at strengthening the state’s food supply chain, supporting farmers, and improving access to locally produced food products. The investments are designed to boost agricultural infrastructure, help small businesses, and improve distribution networks across the Commonwealth.

According to state officials, the funding is part of a broader effort to modernize and expand Virginia’s food system by improving how locally grown and produced goods move from farms to consumers. The grants will support projects involving raw crop processing, dairy and grain handling, food storage, and distribution infrastructure. Leaders say these improvements will help reduce supply chain gaps while supporting agricultural producers and consumers alike.

The initiative is connected to federal funding programs tied to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These programs aim to enhance regional food supply networks and create more resilient local food systems. By investing in processing facilities, storage capacity, and distribution capabilities, the funding is expected to allow farmers to reach broader markets while giving communities increased access to locally sourced products. 

Several projects across Virginia are receiving support, including funding for retail and distribution improvements. In New Market, for example, a local store is set to receive $68,644 through the grant program. The funding will help expand the store’s ability to handle and distribute locally sourced agricultural products, providing farmers with additional selling opportunities and offering customers greater access to local food options.

State leaders emphasized that strengthening food infrastructure benefits both producers and consumers by improving supply reliability and supporting economic growth in rural communities. Officials noted that better processing and transportation capacity can reduce food waste and ensure that local crops, dairy, and grain products are more efficiently delivered to markets.
