Shahid Kapoor’s O’Romeo Opens With Solid Box‑Office & Emotional Industry Support

Mumbai, February 14, 2026: O’Romeo — the highly anticipated Vishal Bhardwaj crime drama starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri — opened in Indian theatres on February 13 with a steady but modest box‑office run on its first day, tracking around ₹8 – 8.25 crore net and recording an overall occupancy of roughly 14 – 15 % nationwide according to early trade estimates. The film’s evening shows performed better than its morning screenings, and it also recorded the second‑highest day‑one occupancy of the year so far in evening slots, indicating steady evening footfalls.

Industry trackers note that O’Romeo outperformed other recent releases such as Devaa and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya on opening day, and also beat the first‑day tally of fellow new release Tu Yaa Main, which opened at around ₹0.55–0.60 crore.

While its opening is solid, the film did not crack the ₹10 crore mark — a benchmark often expected for major Valentine’s Day weekend releases — and remains significantly below some of Shahid Kapoor’s biggest past openings. Nonetheless, trade analysts consider it a decent start for a darker, genre‑driven film

Heartfelt Industry Reactions

Beyond commercial numbers, O’Romeo has sparked a strong emotional response from the film community. Sutapa Sikdar, wife of the late actor Irrfan Khan, shared a poignant message celebrating the film’s release, recalling that Bhardwaj had once envisioned the project with her late husband in the lead under the working title Sapna Didi. Sikdar wrote that Irrfan would be “sending best wishes from heaven,” adding sentimental weight to the long‑gestating project’s theatrical arrival.

Director Vishal Bhardwaj himself issued a personal note of pride and gratitude ahead of the release, stressing that the film is the culmination of years of creative effort and emotional investment. He described O’Romeo as deeply embracing both love and vengeance, reflecting his broader cinematic vision.

Weekend Outlook & Audience Response

The film’s opening figures and audience reaction set a mixed tone heading into the Valentine’s Day weekend, with O’Romeo currently tracking ahead of several recent new releases but also generating debate among viewers over its narrative intensity and pacing.

Industry sources note that O’Romeo’s box‑office trajectory over Friday through Sunday — traditionally crucial for Bollywood openings — will be key in determining its commercial fate, especially in comparison to Tu Yaa Main and other Valentine‑themed films also releasing this weekend.
