Australia’s Jakara Anthony Wins Historic Olympic Gold as Team Faces Mixed Fortunes at Milano-Cortina 2026
Australian freestyle skier Jakara Anthony delivered a historic performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics, winning gold in the women’s dual moguls event while Australia experienced both celebration and disappointment across its winter sports campaign.
Anthony secured the top podium finish in Livigno, Italy, capturing gold in the Olympic debut of dual moguls — a head-to-head racing format that combines speed, aerial tricks, and technical turns. The 27-year-old dominated the elimination rounds and defeated American skier Jaelin Kauf in the final, earning judges’ scores of 20-15 to claim the title.
The victory marked Anthony’s second career Olympic gold medal, following her individual moguls triumph at the Beijing Games, making her the first Australian Winter Olympian to achieve two gold medals.
Anthony’s gold also came as redemption after she surprisingly missed out on a medal earlier in the Games when she finished eighth in the singles moguls event. She rebounded with a flawless dual moguls campaign, defeating reigning singles gold medalist Elizabeth Lemley in the semifinals before winning the final against Kauf.
The competition unfolded in difficult conditions, including heavy snowfall that reduced visibility for athletes. Despite the challenging weather and several crashes during the event, Anthony maintained strong technical execution and aerial control to secure the win.
Anthony’s triumph contributed to one of Australia’s most successful Winter Olympic performances. The country has also celebrated gold medals from other athletes, including men’s moguls champion Cooper Woods, highlighting the nation’s growing strength in freestyle skiing disciplines.
However, Australia’s campaign also faced setbacks. Aerial skiing star Laura Peel — considered a strong medal contender — was forced to withdraw from the Games after suffering a ruptured ACL injury during training, ending her Olympic hopes.
Anthony’s victory has further elevated Australia’s standing at the Milano-Cortina Games, reinforcing the nation’s emergence as a competitive force in winter freestyle events while demonstrating her personal resilience and dominance in moguls skiing.
